Dior’s 1947 New Look had symbolized a new hope and by the Nineteen Fifties both the hope and the style have been absolutely embraced. Improvements in textile expertise following the struggle resulted in new materials such as spandex, volleyball shorts and easy-care material finishes that fitted the suburban life-style of the Nineteen Fifties with its emphasis on casual sportswear for each women and men. But for dress events outdoors the home, for going downtown or to church, attire have been still a must. Paris, cut off from the world through the conflict, once again became the middle of style.
